Spam Musubi
Ingredients
Sauce
Steps
Slice the Spam into 1cm-thick pieces and sear both sides in a pan until golden.
~4 min
Add soy sauce, sugar, and mirin to the pan and glaze the Spam lightly.
~3 min
Why: A light caramelized glaze on the surface builds the sweet-salty flavor.
Mix a little salt and sesame oil into the rice to season it.
~2 min
Pack rice and Spam in layers into a musubi mold (or a cleaned Spam can) to shape it.
~3 min
Watch out: If you don't pack the rice down firmly, the shape collapses when you remove the mold.
Wrap with the seaweed sheet to finish.
~2 min
Tips
- —
Don't over-reduce the glaze — it should just lightly coat the surface, or it turns too salty.
- —
No musubi mold? A cleaned, cut-open milk carton works as a substitute mold.
- —
Best eaten warm, when the seaweed sticks to the rice properly.
Storage
Best eaten the same day; if packing for a lunchbox, wrap the seaweed on right before eating.
